After a trip to the cottage and not having 'service' all the way back, I wasn't able to call my wife to let her know when I'd be back. I discovered this while traveling between states. Particularly if I hadn't used the radio for over 400 miles or so. I didn't really know why putting the phone into and out of Airplane mode worked, it just made sense that it would have to reacquire the tower information.
