Make Illustrator Files Work with Quick Look

I use Illustrator all day everyday and wanted to make all the files I save out to be able to be viewed in the Best new Feature of Leopad, Quick Look”. It is very easy to do all you need to do is download illust.qlgenerator.zip and unzip it to a convenient location. You then need to move it to the Quicklook folder in the Library. Mine was in the Main Drive / Library / Quicklook You may also find it in / Users / YOURUSERNAME / Library / QuickLook. It worked for me out of the box but it may require a restart to work well.

Have TextEdit Auto-Save

This may be something everyone who is an avid TextEdit user already knows but it is new to me and I have not seen it anywhere on the mac web sites. Go to TextEdit’s preferences and select the Open and Save side of the dialog box about 1/4 of the way down you will see the preference to have the files autosaved every so often well for me i am going to pick every 30 seconds. Give this a shot and let me now how it works for you.

Use Spaces More Efficiently

With Spaces, Mac users can finally enjoy what Linux users have had for years: virtual desktops. However, Leopards implementation has a neat trick that I have yet to see in any Linux distro. You can now perform “window dragging” between the desktops without having to use the multi-pane view (ie. 4 screen view).
Simply click on a window as though you were going to drag it. While continuing to hold down the mouse button, press control+<an arrow key> to move that window to another space. Then let go when you are done. Isn’t that a much easier way to manage window clutter?

Make the Expanded Print Dialog the Default View

If you are anything like me, when you print you want to look at all the options that may or may not have been set. Well in Leopard I have gotten very frustrated by having to hit the blue arrow in the print dialog box every time I want to see the settings. My problem have been solved by a real simple Terminal hack. Per the nice folks over at Mactips.org all you need to do is type:

  • defaults write -g PMPrintingExpandedStateForPrint -bool TRUE

This will make the default print dialog show up as the one with all the options. If you don’t like it and want it changed back then all you need to do is change the “TRUE” to “FALSE” in the above code and reenter it into the terminal.

Shortcuts for mailboxes in Mail

Did you know that you can use some keyboard shortcuts in Mail to navigate from Mailbox to Mailbox? The order you have them listed on the side bar is will correlate to which Command + number you need to use, for me the List is:

  • Command - 1: Inbox
  • Command - 2: Outbox
  • Command - 3: Drafts
  • Command - 4: Sent
  • Command - 5: Trash
  • Command - 6: Junk
  • Command - 7: Notes
  • Command - 8: To-Do

Give them a try and let me know how it works for you.

Add Some Quicksilver Functions to Spotlight

spotlight.jpgIf you have switched from Quicksilver to the new Leopard version of Spotlight and are missing the ability to ” restart, sleep, shut down, empty recycle bin, and more” than the Quicksilver’s ExtraScript is for you. All you will need to do is head over to the site and download the .DMG and install it per the directions. I have been using this one for a week or so and have had no problems with it at all.
