A spokesperson for the carrier confirmed to AppleInsider that neither AT&T nor Apple will prevent de-activated first-generation iPhones for serving as surrogate iPod touches.”If the [original] device is not re-activated as a wireless phone after you’ve upgraded to iPhone 3G, it will still work as an iTunes player and can access Wi-Fi,” the spokesperson said. That means old iPhones can still surf the web, check email, and browse the mobile iTunes store when connected to WiFi, and otherwise function as widescreen video iPod with calendar and photo functions. It’s recommended that owners who take this approach upgrade their original iPhones with iPhone Software v2.0 on July 11th prior to de-activating the devices, as it’s unclear whether upgrades to non-active handsets will be possible.

Last night I was going through my feeds and came across this post from Google.

Google has introduced a new RSS Reader for the iPhone and In the normal Google fashion, it is a Beta. To use it all you will need to do is open mobile Safari on your iPhone or if you want to see what it might look like on your computer before you try it on the iPhone use this tip to do so. (Want To See What an iPhone Only Website Looks Like without an iPhone).

The new reader makes mobile RSS reading even better by showing you the titles in a list view, and instead of opening a new link when you click on the title like the current version of Google’s iPhone Reader does, it displays the article’s text right under the title (very web 2.0). It also allows you to “Star” the item next to the title. After you drop the article down to read its content you can even mark it as “Keep Unread”, “Share It”, or “See the Original” which is a link that will open the original content on a new page.

Give it try next time you want to use and RSS reader on the iphone. It has already become my choice for mobile RSS reading. If you like it let us know in the comments and if you hate it let us know why!!

“Third Party Applications on the iPhone

Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.

It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones—this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target.

Some companies are already taking action. Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than “totally open,” we believe it is a step in the right direction. We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.

We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.

Steve

P.S.: The SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod touch. [Oct 17, 2007]”

This is stright from the Hot news apple site.

For all of you who use your iPods to get you address book contacts here is a way to get the smart groups on them.

I got my iPod touch last week, and I realized that, even if it can sync my contacts and groups correctly from Address Book, it cannot sync smart groups. While it is possible to manually copy contacts from a smart group to a standard group, that is boring.

So, I decided to get myself to AppleScript, and built a little script that will help. For the script to work, it is simple: create your smart group and call it, let’s say, SMyGroup (The “S” before meaning smart; otherwise name the group as you want). Built the smart group conditions to make it work the way you need. Then create a standard group called MyGroup. So you have two groups with similar names, with only a “S” in difference. That is necessary because I couldn’t figure out how to distinguish smart from standard groups in Address Book via script. Then use this script:

tell application “Address Book”
repeat with the_person in every person in group “SMyGroup”
add the_person to group “SMyGroup”
end repeat
save addressbook
quit
end tell

Repeat those steps for each smart group to be put into a standard group, and in the AppleScript, just add more repeat loops. Execute it in AppleScript Editor, and your smart and standard groups will be identical, and will sync correctly to your iPhone or touch.

As a bonus hint, you can automate this in Automator. Open the application, and put an Automator » Run AppleScript action into the workflow area, and paste the above code there. Then save it as an iCal module and set it to execute, say, every day at 8:00 repetitively. Then, if you make a change on your computer or iPhone or Touch, you’ll always have a fresh copy the of changes in all of them. Cool!

I got this idea from a blog posting over at Mac OS X hints.

If you really want the iPod Touch and the only reason you are sitting on the fence is because of the limitations Apple placed on the device (no way to add to the calendar). Then go no further. Try this out. Make a contact names @add to calendar. In this contact just add a note field and place all the stuff you need in there starting each line with a bullet of some king like a “-_. This can be done for lists as well. I went to a local Best Buy and tried this out and it does work.

If you are missing the todo list on the iPhone this could work there as well.

Let me know what you think.
