NOVUS More Space LiftTec Arm Review

For about a year I have been doing some freelance work for a local company specia

lizing in custom workspaces. Recently, they became the U.S distributor of a line of products made by a German company, NOVUS. The MoreSpace line of products are highly durable workspace accessories designed to maximize efficiency (They look pretty cool too).

The line of products range from pencil holders to flexible multi-monitor lift arms. I was asked to take home a higher end single monitor arm named, LiftTec Arm III (15-35lbs). Seeing as I am geek about office products, I jumped at the chance. I was excited to see how the arm would change my modest sized IKEA desk into a more efficient and usable surface to do work.

My Home Office
I have a modest sized home office. We (my family) use our workspace to do freelance, pay bills, homework, shop and my youngest son loves to watch Mickey Mouse via iTunes. We have a desktop but I use a laptop to do my work so having plenty of desk space is a must. In my original setup (like most people) my monitor rested on its default stand, and took up quite a lot of valuable space causing lots of clutter.

Installation
About 35min, Although I feel sure this depends on your current monitor and how difficult it is to remove it’s current stand. The LiftTec Arm comes with a standard mounting face and screws to attach to the back of your montior. The base of the Arm comes with several different mounts to attach to your desk. I found installation very easy, even though the instructions were lacking in explanation. I really like how the mount is designed to not damage your desk and channels the wires neatly.

Review
After installing the LiftTec I was able to reacquire the space my old monitor stole, storing the keyboard and mouse when not in use. This has made it much better to use other computers on my desk and for my daughter to do her homework.

The Arm has several tension joints, which allow it to move like a real human arm. I am able to adjust the monitor instantly to the best viewing position, whether showing a friend my screen, positioning the monitor out toward the office couch or lifting the monitor up so my 19 month old son cannot try to “grab” Mickey Mouse.

Despite its high functionality, the LiftTec Arm looks at home in our office and adds refinement to our setup.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone needing more space on there desk, or who needs a more dynamic and ergonomic desk. While pricing makes this a more likely candidate for your office at work, NOVUS offers numerous Arms and other accessories at varying price points.

Use the Find command in Safari with out typing the CMD+F First

I am a firm believer in using Safari on my mac. When I had my windows computer I used Firefox and there is one thing I really miss. The feature is hard to describe in text but here is my best attempt. In Firefox when you are on a webpage and you are looking for a word or sentence you just start typing and the “”Find” bar comes up and you can see the results as you type in more info. By default in Safari you have to type the keyboard shortcut “Command+F” or go to the “Edit” menu and scroll down to the find item and then you get the Find bar at the top of the screen. It seems by the time I do all that I could have found the item myself.

The fix for this is a safari plug-in, Glims. Now Gilms does much more than the Type-ahead support we are talking about here. In fact the list is so long that I am just going to link to the page and let Mac Hang Out give you the run down. To enable what I call the “Find as you type” feature you need to download and install Glims from Machangout.com(Download Link). After you run the installer I suggest you restart Safari then go to the Preferences menu under the Safari menu. Select the Glims item at the end of the row. You may have to expand the Preferences window to the the Glims menus. The setting we are looking for is on the General tab under the area “Browser Window.” Now turn on the “Auto select browser search banner(type-ahead support).” Now when you want to search a page for something just start typing your term.

*Disclaimer – if the page you are on has fill in areas selected this will not work. You will just start typing in the forms.

I Forgot My Admin Password – How Do I Reset It.

This morning I got and e-mail from the site. Doug has forgotten his Admin password for his make ( or it was changed by mistake) and he needed help figuring out how to reset it. Bellow are the instructions for Snow Leopard. If you need the instructions for a different version then scroll to the bottom of the page for the link to the apple support articles on this subject.

This is a 2 step process because your user password and your keychain password will both have to be reset. The first step is to reset the user password from your OS boot disk.

Start up from a Mac OS X Install disc (one whose version is closest to the version of Mac OS X installed). Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc’s main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C). Or, you can use Startup Manager or the Startup Disk preference pane to select the Install disc.
Choose a language, click the arrow button to continue,
Mac OS X v10.6 or later: Choose Password Reset from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.5 or v10.4: Choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.3: Choose Reset Password from the Installer menu.

Tip: If you don’t see this menu or menu choice, you’re probably not started from the disc yet.

Note: The default keyboard layout is U.S. English while started from the installation disc. If you use a keyboard layout other than U.S English, use the Input menu (the flag icon on the right side of the menu bar) to select the desired layout before typing a new password.
Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume.
Select the user name of your original administrator account.Important: Do not select “System Administrator (root)”. This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.
Enter a new password.
Click Save.
Click the red button in the upper left corner to quit the application.
Choose Quit Mac OS X Installer… from the Mac OS X Installer menu.
Click Restart.

Now the second part is to reset your keychain Password. Now this is where it gets tricky because if you don’t remember the old password the only option for you is to delete the keychain and start from scratch with a new one. the following will help you try to figure out your old password and then help you to delete it.

If you want your default keychain to be unlocked automatically when you log in, synchronize your Keychain Access and account login passwords by doing this:

Open Keychain Access (you can get to it by choosing Utilities from the Go menu in the Finder).
From the Edit menu, choose Change Password for Keychain “login.”
Type the former password of the account that you are currently logged in to, then click OK.
If you entered the correct password, a new window appears; enter the original password again in the Current Password field.
In the New Password field, type the password that matches your current account password.
Re-enter the newer password in the Verify field, then click OK.

I don’t remember my original (former) account password

If this is the case, you’ll have to delete the keychain.

In Keychain Access, choose Keychain List from the Edit menu.
Delete the “login” keychain.

The next time you log in to the account, you can save your current password in a keychain.

Moving into the future
