For you Letterbox – Mail.app plugin lovers out there here is a quick fix to get you back it working in 10.6.5 Snow Leopard. First off you will need the new “SupportedPluginCompatibilityUUIDs”.

Then you will need a program to edit info.plist files. If you have developer tools installed you will use Property List Editor if not you will need a program that will edit an .xml file like my favorite Texwrangler.

Next you have to find and edit the info.plist for letterbox. Yours may be a little bit different but by default the file we need  is in You User Folder -> Library -> Mail-> Bundles. If you have opened mail and got the disabled warning message your folder will have “(Disabled)” added to it. For now Leave this alone. Open the folder and you will see a list of the mail plugins you have .

Right click on the Letterbox.mailbundle and select “Show Package Contents” a new Finder window will open and you will see a contents folder, open this and you will see the info.plist file we need to edit. Open it in Textwrangler.app and scrool to the bottom of the file. There you will see the area we need to edit.

Look for (or use the find command) the line <key>SupportedPluginCompatibilityUUIDs</key>.

Once you find this you need to add the 2 strings from above to it. or just copy the next 2 lines and paste it in the file just under the other <string> tags as you see in my screen grab from above, make sure it is before the tag.

Now we need to deal with the “(Disabled)” part of the folder. This is easy just go to the finder and open back to the Mail folder from above and edit the folder name and delete the “(Disabled)” part. If you have other mail plugins you can edit the info.plist file the same way,If you choose not to edit them they will disable again on the next launch of Mail.app. If you have this all done then when you open mail you will be back in business with mail.app and the letterbox plugin.

**** UPDATE***** (11/12/2010 @ 11:07 am est)
I have had 3 people contact me with issues after they edit the info.plist file. I have asked them all to send me a copy of the info.plist file on their machine and all have had either old versions or a very different items in the file. I have asked all of them to re-download the plugin from the original source. (Letterbox Plugin @ Harnly.net)Then prior to opening Mail.app do the edit as above. So Far that has worked for anyone who has had an issue.

These are my ten most useful, the ones I do remember because I use them most often.

Get New Mail: Cmd-Shift-N

If you’re waiting for a message, this can be really handy. Cmd-Tab to Mail, hit Cmd-Shift-N, then Cmd-Tab back to your previous app.

Search Your Mailboxes: Cmd-Option-F

This is probably one of the one’s I use the least. However, that’s probably because it’s a strange shortcut. So, I’ve changed mine to Cmd-K. If you do this, you’ll need to change the shortcut for Mailbox>Erase Deleted Messages>In All Mailboxes. I changed that to Cmd-Option-Ctrl-K.

Quicklook Attachments: Cmd-Y

While you can use Cmd-Y in Finder, you cannot use Cmd-Option-Y (Fullscreen quicklook) in mail. Bummer. (By the way, Cmd-Option-Y is for New Todo.)

New Viewer Window: Cmd-Option-N

This one is good to know simply because all too often I’ll close the main viewer and need to go looking through the menus for the New View Window option. (Of course, it doesn’t occur to me while I’m looking that I can simply click on the dock icon.)

Increase/Decrease Quote Level: Cmd-’ and Cmd-Option-’

This one I only use every now and then, but it’s still helpful. As Omer over at MacTips.org points out, a good way to remember this is that you’re just pressing Command and the key you use to signify quotes in a normal document.

Bounce Messae: Cmd-Shift-B

This goes back to the Junk Mail prevention department. Supposedly, it helps stop spammers if you bounce the messages they send you. (It will appear to them as if the message was sent to a bad address.)

New Mail Message: Cmd-N

This is probably the most obvious of all of these. But you should be using Cmd-N to make a new message and not be clicking in the toolbar. (Or even worse, the menu bar.)

• IMAP/Sent
• IMAP/Trash

Then, within Mail.app’s Accounts Preferences, on the Mailbox Behaviors tab, check/set these things:

1. Uncheck “Store draft messages on the server.” (I noticed that Gmail.com erroneously keeps several incremental copies of each message and later deletes them, so I just disabled this option to avoid the problem altogether.)
2. Check “Store sent messages on the server” and select your deletion interval — mine is set to one week.
3. Uncheck “Store junk messages on the server.”
4. Check “Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox.”
5. Check “Store deleted messages on the server” and select your deletion interval — mine is one week.

Then, on the Advanced tab, set IMAP Path Prefix: IMAP — this relates to the labels you made earlier. Finally, in the sidebar (gacked from this post

):

1. Highlight IMAP/Sent in the sidebar and select Mailbox » Use This Mailbox For » Sent.
2. Highlight IMAP/Trash in the sidebar and select Mailbox » Use This Mailbox For » Trash.

This workaround does make temporary duplicates of every message you sent and/or deleted, but they only remain duplicates for as long as you set your deletion interval above. I have not noticed any problems using this method so far, especially with correct mail counts and the possibility of deleting one message from Mail.app that deletes the whole thread in Gmail.com.”

In the comments thread there is some advise on using this method on the Spam folder.

Just command + click on the link and it will open a new tab in the web browser and not bring the web browser to the front.
