Just the other day I got a question from Anthony about making a Template in Pages.app. Here is his questions “Do you know how to create a template in Pages for paper that has a pre-printed header? The header extends 3″ from the top of the page. I would like to be able to prepare documents that will always have the 3″ space at the top on every page as I am working through the document.”-Anthony

Anthony it is real easy to do. Open a blank document and set it up the way that you want the layout ect… When the current document is set up then open the file menu and click on “Save as Template”

E-mailing Pages Documents To Windows Users

I received an e-mail form Kathryn asking why people were not able to open attachments to her e-mails. After I asked her A bit more about what was going on, I concluded she was sending .pages documents to people who were either on mac without pages or worse on a windows computer(poor people). What Isuggested to here was to either save the Pages file as a .pdf or save a Word Document Copy.

If you are not sure how to save as a .doc file then this is for you. It is really simple. Open the save dialog (Command + S). If your save box does not look like the one below then all you need to do is click on the Box just to the right of the file name. It looks like a down arrow. Go thought all the steps of saving the document as you normally would, but just before to click “Save” check the box next to “Save copy as:” make sure Word Document is selected and you are good to go.

Create Custom Pages Templates

If you ever need to create a template for a document in Apples Pages, here is how to make a custom one in 4 easy steps.

Open up pages and select the blank document option from the template chooser, now click the choose button in the bottom right of the window. This will load a blank document.
Go crazy, you can use all of your creative talent to make your template, remember to add enough text and photo boxes. You should also pick the fonts you want to use in each box.
When you are happy with your template go to the top menu and click file ->Save as Template. A Finder window will throw up the current destination. All you need to do is give the template and appropriate name.
Once your template is saved you can access it in the Template Chooser by clicking on My Templates in the bottom left corner of the Template Chooser window click your template. It will also appear in all Templates as well.

You are now set up and ready to use your custom template whenever you need to.

Organize Your Pages ’09 Templates

This is a pretty simple hint, but if you’re like me, and have a number of templates that you’ve created in Pages, you probably wish they were organized in the Template Chooser, rather than being all displayed together in the My Templates section.

You can create your own sub-grouping under My Templates by navigating to your user’s Library » Application Support » iWork » Pages » Templates folder. Here you will see one folder (My Templates) which contains any templates that you’ve already created. You can create new folders at this level, adjacent to My Templates for your new subgroups. Note that you can’t create folders inside of My Templates; they won’t show up in Pages.

In my case, I created folders for each of the companies I work with, and one Personal folder for my own letters. In each folder, I have Letter.template, Invoice.template, Case Study.template, etc. My Personal folder only contains Letter.template.

After creating the folders, simply move your templates from My Templates into the appropriate new folders. You can/should leave the My Templates folder there, even if it is empty. If you delete it, Pages will re-create it anyway — it’s required because it’s the default location for any new templates you create.

If you want to again see all of your templates in the Template Chooser, just select My Templates from the left-side hierarchy. (Any templates left loose in the Templates folder, however, will not be shown, even when selecting My Templates from the Template Chooser.)

Annoyingly, the My Templates folder is always re-created each time you go to save a new template. Once created, this will then show up as another sub-group My Templates in the Template Chooser.

If you’d like to undo this hint, simply move all your templates back to the folder My Templates inside Templates, then delete all of your now-empty subgroup folders. Next time you open Template Chooser, all of your templates will simply appear under My Templates, and there will no longer be any subgroups (including the annoying My Templates subgroup).

Turn Off Hyperlinks in Pages

I have begun using Pages more and more lately to make some really nice documents. So far there has only been one thing that really ticks me off about pages. When I type in an e-mail address or a Website I automatically turns it into a hyperlink.

Well after a bit of searching I found out all you need to do is turn this “feature” off Once you have Pages open navigate to the Preferences. Click on the Auto-Correctin icon and look at the 4th check box down. To get pages to stop making links out of e-mail and websites just un-check the box and click okay. No more hyperlinks in my documents.

Create a four-page folded booklet in Pages

Start in Pages with four blank pages in the Page Layout section.

The first document page will be your cover, or front, and the second document page will be the back of the card. After these are finished to your satisfaction, you will need to flip the pictures and text boxes both vertically and horizontally. When the sheet is folded, they will be right side up with the top at the fold. Be sure you have the text below or above the picture where you want it. I found that I had to leave the page and come back to it before I could flip them. (In Word, flipping seems to be impossible unless you can change it into a drawing. So save it, open it in Preview and flip your pages there. You might want to customize your tool bar from the View Menu, or flip it from the Tools Menu.) Use the Option key with the flip to do only that page.

The third document page will be the first inside page of the card. The fourth document page will be the second inside page of the card. These do not need to be flipped. When you are happy with them, go to the Print menu, and where it says Copies and Pages, click to show Layout. Where it says Pages per Sheet, check “4″ and leave the Layout Direction on the first setting. Now you can save your file as a PDF to look at it, or go ahead and print it, fold it, and you are finished!

Zooming in or out when resizing the window in Pages.app!

Over at A New Mac Tip Every Day they have got a real useful tip about pages.

Being really used to Microsoft Word, the first thing that really annoyed me about Pages is that when you resize the window, it doesn’t adjust the zoom accordingly. I just feel like there is absolutely no point in resizing a window to gain nothing, and that is what you get if you don’t readjust the zoom afterwards. I also don’t really like the predetermined zoom level, because I never know which one I want. I just like widening the window and that it automatically zooms in. It is possible in Pages, but it is not on by default. There is an option in the dialog where you can choose the zoom level called “Fit Width”. I tried this last, after going through all the preferences, because it didn’t make sense to me that that was it. I thought it would adjust the zoom only temporarily, but no, it stays enabled.
