I am a firm believer in using Safari on my mac. When I had my windows computer I used Firefox and there is one thing I really miss. The feature is hard to describe in text but here is my best attempt. In Firefox when you are on a webpage and you are looking for a word or sentence you just start typing and the “”Find” bar comes up and you can see the results as you type in more info. By default in Safari you have to type the keyboard shortcut “Command+F” or go to the “Edit” menu and scroll down to the find item and then you get the Find bar at the top of the screen. It seems by the time I do all that I could have found the item myself.

The fix for this is a safari plug-in, Glims. Now Gilms does much more than the Type-ahead support we are talking about here. In fact the list is so long that I am just going to link to the page and let Mac Hang Out give you the run down. To enable what I call the “Find as you type” feature you need to download and install Glims from Machangout.com(Download Link). After you run the installer I suggest you restart Safari then go to the Preferences menu under the Safari menu. Select the Glims item at the end of the row. You may have to expand the Preferences window to the the Glims menus. The setting we are looking for is on the General tab under the area “Browser Window.” Now turn on the “Auto select browser search banner(type-ahead support).” Now when you want to search a page for something just start typing your term.

*Disclaimer – if the page you are on has fill in areas selected this will not work. You will just start typing in the forms.

Step 4: To access the folder with a keyboard shortcut, figure out how far from the left of the bookmarks bar you placed your new bookmark.
If you are a keyboard junkie as I am striving to become then you really need to know how to move from tab to tab in Safari. All you need to do is use the Command + Shift keys and then add the left or right arrow to move from left to right.

NOTE: This is not the same as Firefox, in Firefox you can only use the Keyboard for the first 9 tabs. You need to use Command + 1-9 for the tab you want to open. Example if the tab you want is 5th in line then use Command +5.

I like using Safari better for this reason alone.
Now navigate to the site you want to see on an iPhone. I tested with Amazon.com because it looks totally different than the main Amazon site.

I am an avid Firefox user for mainly one real big reason. You guessed it, the ability to customize it. The one customization I can not live with out is the plug-in called Tab Mix Plus. There are so many things you can do with this plug-in that I would have to spend a week typing to tell you about them all. The main setting I use is “Force to open new tab” and set that to “links to other sites” and then I enable Single Window Mode. You may ask what does this do for me? Well it allows me to open a new link into a new tab so I don’t have to navigate away from what I am reading. The best example I can give is this…. I use Google reader for all my feeds. I like to view all the rss Feeds at once then go back and review the sites and articles that I have clicked on the links to. I have been trying to find away to do this in Safari and have come very close. In Safari Click on a link while holding down on the command (⌘) key.

Do you know a better way? If there is a plug-in for safari that does this could you please leave a comment below or contact us so we can let the rest of us know how. If I can figure this out I will be all about switching to Safari.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve accidentally hit command-Q while in Safari and lost tons of important tabs. Unfortunately there’s no warning so if you make such a mistake, that’s that. Well, not quite anymore, thanks to TabStop. TabStop is a handy utility that causes Safari to warn you before closing a browser window if it includes multiple tabs, so you’ll no longer lose those tabbed sites by mistake.
