I am a firm believer in using Safari on my mac. When I had my windows computer I used Firefox and there is one thing I really miss.   The feature is hard to describe in text but here is my best attempt. In Firefox when you are on a webpage and you are looking for a word or sentence  you just start typing and the “”Find” bar comes up and you can see the results as you type in more info. By default in Safari you have to type the keyboard shortcut “Command+F” or go to the “Edit” menu and scroll down to the find item and then you get the Find bar at the top of the screen. It seems by the time I do all that I could have found the item myself.

The fix for this is a safari plug-in, Glims. Now Gilms does much more than the Type-ahead support we are talking about here. In fact the list is so long that I am just going to link to the page and let Mac Hang Out give you the run down. To enable what I call the “Find as you type” feature  you need to download and install Glims from Machangout.com(Download Link). After you run the installer I suggest you restart Safari then go to the Preferences menu under the Safari menu. Select the Glims item at the end of the row. You may have to expand the Preferences window to the the Glims menus. The setting we are looking for is on the General tab under the area “Browser Window.” Now turn on the “Auto select browser search banner(type-ahead support).” Now when you want to search a page for something just start typing your term.

*Disclaimer – if the page you are on has fill in areas selected this will not work. You will just start typing in the forms.

There isn’t an obvious way to add sites to Safari 4 Beta’s new Top Sites page, but this is a Mac after all, so it occurred to me that drag and drop might work, and it does:

After downloading something, I usually want to go to my downloads folder. I’ve discovered recently that you can put folders into your Safari bookmarks bar. This means that instead of having to click on my downloads folder in the dock, I can simply hit a Keyboard Shortcut and it will open up the Downloads folder in Finder. 

Step 1: In Finder, locate the folder you want to be able to open up from the bookmarks bar.

If you are a keyboard junkie as I am striving to become then you really need to know how to move from tab to tab in Safari. All you need to do is use the Command + Shift keys and then add the left or right arrow to move from left to right. 

NOTE: This is not the same as Firefox, in Firefox you can only use the Keyboard for the first 9 tabs.  You need to use Command + 1-9 for ...]]>

(WAIT ITS REALLY EASY I PROMISE DON’T LET THE DEVELOPER MODE SCARE YOU) To use the developer mode in safari all you have to do is open the Preferences menu in Safari and click on the Advanced tab.

Now for the iPhone part. Drop down the Devlop menu and hover over “User Agent” and then click on “Mobile Safari 1.1.3 – iPhone. Now navigate to the site you want to see on an iPhone. I tested with Amazon.com because it looks totally different than the main Amazon site.

To open new the new search from Safari’s toolbar search all you need to do is type in your search terms and instead of hitting enter hit command + enter. As of Safari 3.1, double-clicking on a free area in the tab bar opens a new tab. I’ve wanted this feature since it was introduced in Firefox, and now my favorite browser has it, too.
