If you set up groups before transferring contacts to the iPhone, you can then show only a certain group (or all groups) when browsing contacts. I set up several groups in Address Book, but noticed that you can’t change which group a contact is in on the iPhone itself. Nor can you add new groups on the phone, either.
However, if you want to add a new contact to a group that is already on the iPhone, first go to the Phone Application, then tap “Contacts” and then tap the “Groups” button at the top left of the screen to select the group to which you want to add the new contact. It will return you to the Contacts screen with the group name at the top. Now tap the “+” button to add a new contact that will be associated with that group.
If I get a call or email from someone not in my contact list that I know I want in a particular group (like “Work” contacts), I go through the above steps to create the new contact in that group, then go back to the phone call or email and tap on “Add to Existing Contact” to make the new contact. If I “Create New Contact” from a recent call or an email there’s no way to edit the group into which the new contact is placed.

Is there a way to send a txt to all members of a group on iPhone without having to add them 1 by 1 to the message? For instance: I have a group called “family”. I should be able to type the word family and then proceed to typing my message.

If you are using the Mac’s “Address Book” app you can easily manage your groups and then sync with your iPhone Contacts app. See the Address Book Help for info on how to setup and manage your groups. Go to iTunes and, after connecting your iPhone, select your iPhone under devices in the left hand column and then select “Info” from the tabs at the top to set up Address Book Contacts syncing options. You can also sync with Yahoo and Google address books there.

@Santosh & Antonio: fortunately as of iOS4, third party apps can now send mass text to a group of contacts.
I typically prefer to manage all my groups directly on the phone. That is why we develop Tacts. It is able to send group text and email and also provide comprehensive group management features.

This is clearly a feature oversight on the part of the developers. Here’s a work around:
1. Go to ‘Contacts’.
2. Tap ‘Groups’.
3. Select the group under which you want the new contact to be added.
4. Add the contact without entering the number.
5. Return to ‘Recents’.
6. Select the phone number you would like to associate with the new contact.
7. Tap ‘Add to Existing Contact’.
Hopefully this missing feature will be added in a future release.

Hi,
iPhone really s**ks for this. It is clearly a missing feature. I am using a small free 3rd party iPhone App, easy group
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/easy-group/id461469079?l=fr&ls=1&mt=8
I handle the group management correctly. But really too bad that we need one more app to do this job.

If I might suggest our “MailShot Pro” app…
This performs the unique trick of creating “group contacts” that you can use as you would a single contact, enabling you to email your group directly from almost all popular apps on your device (including the standard Mail app). It manages its own groups, though it can import from those in your address book very rapidly, if you have them.
A free version is also available on the App Store, so you can “try before you buy.”

The best way to manage contacts is from the iCloud (web app). If you miss the top left “Groups” button, just create some in iCloud. You can even select multiple contacts.
I really miss some “group features” in iPhone though. Like ringtones assigned to a group, sending SMS etc. And managing groups from the iPhone itself of course.
